BAFTA have announced this year’s nominees!

2015 NOMINATIONS
(presented in 2016)

BEST FILM
I don’t know if British Films aren’t allowed to be considered “Best Films”, let’s assume not to judge this batch fairly.  This is a genuinely dull bunch with more risque films being omitted.  Mad Max, Room, The Hateful Eight seem more appropriate than some of these on this list.  I did think The Big Short was a good film, but certainly not the best of the year.  Bridge of Spies is a faultless film and technical masterpiece, but missing the heart that Room has, the innovation that Mad Max has, and the visceral brutality that The Hateful Eight has.  Carol is visually beautiful but dull.  The Revenant gets my vote here while I agree that Spotlight is an excellent drama deserving of its place on this list.  I reckon Carol will win it (meh), but The Revenant and Bridge of Spies are in with a shot.

THE BIG SHORT Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Brad Pitt
BRIDGE OF SPIES Kristie Macosko Krieger, Marc Platt, Steven Spielberg
CAROL Elizabeth Karlsen, Christine Vachon, Stephen Woolley
THE REVENANT Steve Golin, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Arnon Milchan, Mary Parent, Keith Redmon
SPOTLIGHT Steve Golin, Blye Pagon Faust, Nicole Rocklin, Michael Sugar

OUTSTANDING BRITISH FILM
Yes to all of these except The Danish Girl – that film was a dire mess.  I actually face-palmed 5 times while watching it.  Such a superficial depiction of a fascinating character and story.  Eddie Redmayne is appalling in it.  You put the man in a wheelchair and then a dress and you give him back to back statues?  How simple can the academy be?  Anyway, The Lobster is my favourite film of the year hands down, but 45 Years is beautiful and so British!

45 YEARS Andrew Haigh, Tristan Goligher
AMY Asif Kapadia, James Gay-Rees
BROOKLYN John Crowley, Finola Dwyer, Amanda Posey, Nick Hornby
THE DANISH GIRL Tom Hooper, Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Anne Harrison, Gail Mutrux, Lucinda Coxon
EX MACHINA Alex Garland, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich
THE LOBSTER Yorgos Lanthimos, Ceci Dempsey, Ed Guiney, Lee Magiday, Efthimis Filippou

OUTSTANDING DEBUT BY A BRITISH WRITER, DIRECTOR OR PRODUCER
Clearly, I really need to see Ex Machina.

ALEX GARLAND (Director) Ex Machina
DEBBIE TUCKER GREEN (Writer/Director) Second Coming
NAJI ABU NOWAR (Writer/Director) RUPERT LLOYD (Producer) Theeb
SEAN MCALLISTER (Director/Producer), ELHUM SHAKERIFAR (Producer) A Syrian Love Story
STEPHEN FINGLETON (Writer/Director) The Survivalist

FILM NOT IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Much like Carol, The Assassin is visually beautiful but dull.  Ugh.  Somehow I haven’t seen the rest.

THE ASSASSIN Hou Hsiao-Hsien
FORCE MAJEURE Ruben Östlund
THEEB Naji Abu Nowar, Rupert Lloyd
TIMBUKTU Abderrahmane Sissako
WILD TALES Damián Szifron

DOCUMENTARY
Amy is just SO GOOD!

AMY Asif Kapadia, James Gay-Rees
CARTEL LAND Matthew Heineman, Tom Yellin
HE NAMED ME MALALA Davis Guggenheim, Walter Parkes, Laurie MacDonald
LISTEN TO ME MARLON Stevan Riley, John Battsek, George Chignell, R.J. Cutler
SHERPA Jennifer Peedom, Bridget Ikin, John Smithson

ANIMATED FILM
What a bizarre category – Inside Out is of a calibre where it could (and should) be nominated for “Best Film” while the others are children’s movies without depth.  It’s a sure thing for Pixar this year!

INSIDE OUT Pete Docter
MINIONS Pierre Coffin, Kyle Balda
SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE Mark Burton, Richard Starzak

DIRECTOR
Adam McKay!?  For his misogynist direction of a light drama?  Ridley Scott for a comedy space romp!?  The others make perfect sense and I don’t know which of those 3 will take it home – I hope Spielberg as Bridge of Spies is literally a 101 lesson on how to technically direct the perfect film.

THE BIG SHORT Adam McKay
BRIDGE OF SPIES Steven Spielberg
CAROL Todd Haynes
THE MARTIAN Ridley Scott
THE REVENANT Alejandro G. Iñárritu

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
I love Inside Out so much and it deserves as many awards as it can possibly get!

BRIDGE OF SPIES Matthew Charman, Ethan Coen, Joel Coen
EX MACHINA Alex Garland
THE HATEFUL EIGHT Quentin Tarantino
INSIDE OUT Josh Cooley, Pete Docter, Meg LeFauve
SPOTLIGHT Tom McCarthy, Josh Singer

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
ROOM!  Please!  Although Sorkin goes classic Sorkin with Steve Jobs… if you like that sort of thing.  Money on The Big Short which seems to be the darling of this year’s BAFTAs.

THE BIG SHORT Adam McKay, Charles Randolph
BROOKLYN Nick Hornby
CAROL Phyllis Nagy
ROOM Emma Donoghue
STEVE JOBS Aaron Sorkin

LEADING ACTOR
I regret not seeing Trumbo.  My vote is for DiCaprio or Fassbender.  Damon does not belong on this list for a COMEDY SPACE ROMP!?  And Eddie Redmayne… well… I’ve already told you how I feel about this one (face-palm).  Uh… no Tom Courtenay for 45 Years?  He won the Berlinale acting accolades and rightfully so! Also… no Michael Keaton for Spotlight?  Uh… these two clearly need to be swapped.

BRYAN CRANSTON Trumbo
EDDIE REDMAYNE The Danish Girl
LEONARDO DICAPRIO The Revenant
MATT DAMON The Martian
MICHAEL FASSBENDER Steve Jobs

LEADING ACTRESS
Even more shocking than no Tom Courtenay for Leading Actor is no Charlotte Rampling for her ridiculously powerful performance in 45 Years which saw her jointly win acting accolades at Berlinale!  But MAGGIE SMITH LADY IN THE VAN????  REALLY???  Fingers crossed for Brie Larson.

ALICIA VIKANDER The Danish Girl
BRIE LARSON Room
CATE BLANCHETT Carol
MAGGIE SMITH The Lady in the Van
SAOIRSE RONAN Brooklyn

SUPPORTING ACTOR
Del Toro was excellent in Sicario, Elba fine in Beats of No Nation, Mark Ruffalo gave his worst career performance in an otherwise amazing drama Spotlight, but it’s got to be Christian Bale!  He even acted a glass eye!

BENICIO DEL TORO Sicario
CHRISTIAN BALE The Big Short
IDRIS ELBA Beasts of No Nation
MARK RUFFALO Spotlight
MARK RYLANCE Bridge of Spies

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Rooney Mara won acting accolades in Cannes for Carol, but I’m hopeful that hateful wins out with a full on comeback for Jennifer Jason Leigh who was outstanding in The Hateful Eight.  She makes that film, and what an excellent film it is!

ALICIA VIKANDER Ex Machina
JENNIFER JASON LEIGH The Hateful Eight
JULIE WALTERS Brooklyn
KATE WINSLET Steve Jobs
ROONEY MARA Carol

ORIGINAL MUSIC
The Hateful Eight is most deserving, but we all love a good John Williams Star Wars soundtrack!  Everything else in this category I found annoying.

BRIDGE OF SPIES Thomas Newman
THE HATEFUL EIGHT Ennio Morricone
THE REVENANT Ryuichi Sakamoto, Carsten Nicolai
SICARIO Jóhann Jóhannsson
STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS John Williams

CINEMATOGRAPHY
Mad Max finally gets a nomination!  Yes please!  Carol is its main competition and likely to win.

BRIDGE OF SPIES Janusz Kamiński
CAROL Ed Lachman
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD John Seale
THE REVENANT Emmanuel Lubezki
SICARIO Roger Deakins

EDITING
Guys, The Martian was an average comedy space romp – why all the nominations!? Mad Max is the deserving winner here.

THE BIG SHORT Hank Corwin
BRIDGE OF SPIES Michael Kahn
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Margaret Sixel
THE MARTIAN Pietro Scalia
THE REVENANT Stephen Mirrione

PRODUCTION DESIGN
Mad Max and Star Wars deserve it most, but Carol will probably win it.

BRIDGE OF SPIES Adam Stockhausen, Rena DeAngelo
CAROL Judy Becker, Heather Loeffler
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Colin Gibson, Lisa Thompson
THE MARTIAN Arthur Max, Celia Bobak
STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Rick Carter, Darren Gilford, Lee Sandales

COSTUME DESIGN
Carol and Brooklyn will duke this one out.  Both are set in the same time period and both are visually stunning.

BROOKLYN Odile Dicks-Mireaux
CAROL Sandy Powell
CINDERELLA Sandy Powell
THE DANISH GIRL Paco Delgado
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Jenny Beavan

MAKE UP & HAIR
Probably Carol.

BROOKLYN Morna Ferguson, Lorraine Glynn
CAROL Jerry DeCarlo, Patricia Regan
THE DANISH GIRL Jan Sewell
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Lesley Vanderwalt, Damian Martin
THE REVENANT Sian Grigg, Duncan Jarman, Robert Pandini

SOUND
Mad Max was insane (positive comment).  Star Wars is also a fab example of sound design 101.  The Revenant had some amazing ideas, but the mix was too loud and (maybe it was just my copy???) the ADR was very much out of sync.  That is to say that the dialogue was out of sync with the actors’ lip movement for much of the film.

BRIDGE OF SPIES Drew Kunin, Richard Hymns, Andy Nelson, Gary Rydstrom
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Scott Hecker, Chris Jenkins, Mark Mangini, Ben Osmo, Gregg Rudloff,
David White
THE MARTIAN Paul Massey, Mac Ruth, Oliver Tarney, Mark Taylor
THE REVENANT Lon Bender, Chris Duesterdiek, Martin Hernandez, Frank A. Montaño, Jon Taylor,
Randy Thom
STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS David Acord, Andy Nelson, Christopher Scarabosio, Matthew
Wood, Stuart Wilson

SAMUEL-613 Billy Lumby, Cheyenne Conway

THE EE RISING STAR AWARD (voted for by the public)
Well, if the public is voting – they’ll vote John Boyega of Star Wars as everybody on earth has now seen that film and knows of him. Brie Larson seems to be a bit too successful in her career to date to be considered “rising” but she is definitely the best actor of this bunch with the best body of work!  If we want to talk actually rising star, then Bel Powley and Taron Egerton are literally on the rise.  Everyone else is now there.  Anyway, why even debate this – STAR WARS.

BEL POWLEY
BRIE LARSON
DAKOTA JOHNSON
JOHN BOYEGA
TARON EGERTON
