BIFA2015

by Joanna Orland

The Lobster leads the list of nominations for the Moët British Independent Film Awards, announced yesterday.  Also announced was a landmark series of screenings of BIFA-nominated and winning films, supported by the BFI. The partnership will see a selection of nominated films screened across the UK from November 23rd, the first time that BIFA has been able to bring the films it celebrates directly to new audiences. The full programme will be announced on November 11th.

The winners will be announced at The Moët British Independent Film Awards on Sunday December 6th at Old Billingsgate, and the event will be live streamed on www.bifa.film.

2015 MOËT BRITISH INDEPENDENT FILM AWARDS NOMINATIONS

A solid list of nominees with The Lobster being my absolute favourite, followed by a very wonderful film in 45 Years.

AMY James Gay-Rees, Asif Kapadia

MACBETH Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Laura Hastings-Smith, Todd Louiso, Jacob Koskoff, Michael Lesslie, Justin Kurzel

Again, my favourites are The Lobster and 45 Years respectively, but Justin Kurzel certainly did some interesting work with his version of Macbeth!

45 YEARS Andrew Haigh
AMY Asif Kapadia
EX MACHINA Alex Garland
THE LOBSTER Yorgos Lanthimos
MACBETH Justin Kurzel

The Lobster all the way – the hilarity and absurdity of the world Lanthimos built in this film is outstanding.

45 YEARS Andrew Haigh
BROOKLYN Nick Hornby
EX MACHINA Alex Garland
HIGH-RISE Amy Jump
THE LOBSTER Yorgos Lanthimos, Efthymis Filippou

Best Actress sponsored by MAC
Saoirse Ronan is captivating in Brooklyn!  Carey Mulligan is just a bit wet in Suffragette and Cotillard is just doing her usual awesome thing in Macbeth.  Charlotte Rampling on the other hand gives a very harrowing performance and was the deserved winner of the acting accolades at this year’s Berlinale film festival.  Let’s hope she can repeat the win!

MARION COTILLARD Macbeth
CAREY MULLIGAN Suffragette
CHARLOTTE RAMPLING 45 Years
SAOIRSE RONAN Brooklyn
ALICIA VIKANDER The Danish Girl

Best Actor sponsored by Movado
Tom Hardy is hilarious in Legend, whether or not intentional.  Tom Hiddleston is perfectly capable in High-Rise as is Fassbender in Macbeth.  And while I love everything about The Lobster including Colin Farrell’s performance, Tom Courtenay’s Berlinale-winning performance deserves even more accolades.

TOM COURTENAY 45 Years
COLIN FARRELL The Lobster
MICHAEL FASSBENDER Macbeth
TOM HARDY Legend
TOM HIDDLESTON High-Rise

Best Supporting Actress
All are good performances, but Olivia Colman’s deadpan turn in The Lobster is one of the main highlights of an all around fantastic and original film.

HELENA BONHAM CARTER Suffragette
OLIVIA COLMAN The Lobster
ANNE-MARIE DUFF Suffragette
SIENNA MILLER High-Rise
JULIE WALTERS Brooklyn

Best Supporting Actor
Again, all solid performances, but Luke Evans gives a breakthrough performance in High-Rise.  A performance that will define his career for years to come!  Just outstanding!

BRENDAN GLEESON Suffragette
DOMHNALL GLEESON Brooklyn
SEAN HARRIS Macbeth
