Selma is a very powerful and important film about iconic civil rights campaigner Martin Luther King Jr. and his battle for federal legislation which would freely allow black citizens to register to vote. Supporters flock to the city of Selma where a demonstration march to Montgomery is being staged. The true events harrowingly unfold onscreen in the masterful hands of director Ava DuVernay.
Selma has received huge accolades and awards recognition for its portrayal of the true events surrounding Dr. King’s efforts in Selma fifty years ago. With four Golden Globe Award nominations including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, and Best Actor, and a win for Best Original Song, it is also nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Song at the 87th Academy Awards. Controversially, The Oscars have omitted nominations for Ava DuVernay for Best Director and David Oyelowo for Best Actor for his fantastic and moving performance as King.
Ava, David, members of the cast and celebrity attendees gathered at the Curzon in Mayfair on Tuesday, January 27th 2015 for the UK premiere of Selma.
