Oscar Nominations 2015
The 2015 Oscar Nominee list is looking a little vanilla this year – in more ways than one.
Here is the full list of Oscar Nominations 2015 + commentary:
Best Picture
American Sniper
Birdman
Boyhood
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Selma
The Theory of Everything
Whiplash
—
The Academy can vote for up to 10 Best Picture films, and have very blatantly omitted the excellent Nightcrawler from this category, and may have upset some other people with the lack of Inherent Vice (not me). I am very pleased to see Whiplash on this list! But it will most likely go to Boyhood, and deservingly so.
Best Director
Alejandro Innaritu, Birdman
Richard Linklater, Boyhood
Bennett Miller, Foxcatcher
Wes Anderson, The Grand Budapest Hotel
Morten Tyldum, The Imitation Game
—
Morten Tyldum? Really? But no Damien Chazelle or Clint Eastwood?
Best Actor
Steve Carell, Foxcatcher
Bradley Cooper, American Sniper
Benedict Cumberbatch, The Imitation Game
Michael Keaton, Birdman
Eddie Redmayne, The Theory of Everything
—
Bradley Cooper over Jake Gyllenhaal is a huge mistake, but the rest are pretty solid. Very proud of Steve Carell as I’m a huge fan of his work! He’s nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Foxcatcher for the BAFTAs don’t you know!
Best Actress
Marion Cotillard, Two Days, One Night
Felicity Jones, The Theory of Everything
Julianne Moore, Still Alice
Rosamund Pike, Gone Girl
Reese Witherspoon, Wild
—
Marion Cotillard made the cut! She’s second in best female performance of the year behind Julianne Moore, but there were some pretty strong bets that she’d be excluded. Poor Jennifer Aniston…
Best Supporting Actor
Robert Duvall, The Judge
Ethan Hawke, Boyhood
Edward Norton, Birdman
Mark Ruffalo, Foxcatcher
J.K. Simmons, Whiplash
—
Just Keep Simmons …
Best Supporting Actress
Patricia Arquette, Boyhood
Laura Dern, Wild
Keira Knightley, The Imitation Game
Emma Stone, Birdman
Meryl Streep, Into the Woods
—
This one belongs to Patricia Arquette, but it’s very nice to see Laura Dern included as she is the highlight of Wild. No idea what Keira Knightley is doing in this category.
Best Adapted Screenplay
American Sniper
The Imitation Game
Inherent Vice
The Theory of Everything
Whiplash
—
I <3 Whiplash!
Best Original Screenplay
Birdman
Boyhood
Foxcatcher
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Nightcrawler
—
Birdman has to win this one! Especially as it will probably lose out to Linklater for Directing and Best Picture. It’s a tough year with these two films competing neck in neck – both of extremely high calibre.
Best Cinematography
Birdman
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Ida
Mr. Turner
Unbroken
—
Congrats to Dick Poop on his Oscar nom for Mr. Turner! He is definitely this year’s Adele Dazeem.
Best Costume Design

Whiplash in particular stands out for its fantastic editing. The skill involved in editing so precisely to the music is mind-blowing. In fact, Whiplash director Damien Chazelle told me all about it! #Honoured

Guardians of the Galaxy
—
Sure sure.. they all looked fab.
Best Original Score

Interstellar? Are you joking? The Hans Zimmer score was so grating. Albeit, it was predominantly a mix issue.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Guardians of the Galaxy
Interstellar
X-Men; Days of Future Past
—
APES! In lieu of Andy Serkis not getting an acting Oscar nom.
Best Animated Feature
Big Hero 6
The Boxtrolls
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Song of the Sea
The Tale of Princess Kaguya
—
Heading the Oscar snubs controversy is the lack of The Lego Movie in this category. Most people thought it was a surefire win, nevermind ever doubting it would get a nomination. This is heartbreaking and unjust. While there are good films on this list, none are as great as Lego. Everything is not awesome. Also, yeah… I know… Selma didn’t get best actor or director noms…. Oscars’ lacking diversity…. sure… but The Lego Movie is just such a great film, not as important as Selma, but certainly better made and more cinematically enjoyable.

Last Days in Vietnam
The Salt of the Earth
Virunga
—
And the award for 3rd biggest snub goes to Life Itself.

—
With Xavier Dolan’s Mommy not even being shortlisted for the nominations, I lost all interest in this category. But, it’s between Leviathan and Ida.
