2015 Golden Globe Nominations

The 2015 Golden Globe Awards nominations have been announced.  I’m not quite sure about all of their choices, but here is a breakdown with some commentary on what it all means:

BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
Apparently Birdman is a comedy, and Whiplash and Nightcrawler didn’t make the cut.  Mediocre films such as The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything however…. All I have to say is GO BOYHOOD!
BOYHOOD
FOXCATCHER
THE IMITATION GAME
SELMA
THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
This just has to go to Julianne, but great to see Felicity Jones finally garnering some recognition.
JENNIFER ANISTON CAKE
FELICITY JONES THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING
JULIANNE MOORE STILL ALICE
ROSAMUND PIKE GONE GIRL
REESE WITHERSPOON WILD

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
Again, as Birdman is apparently a comedy, we’re not seeing frontrunner for the Oscar Michael Keaton on here.  Really hoping for underdog Jake Gyllenhaal to take it home as he was a revelation in Nightcrawler.
STEVE CARELL FOXCATCHER
BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH THE IMITATION GAME
JAKE GYLLENHAAL NIGHTCRAWLER
DAVID OYELOWO SELMA
EDDIE REDMAYNE THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING

BEST MOTION PICTURE – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
No one saw the Pride sneak attack coming!  As good as The Grand Budapest Hotel is, it’s Birdman all the way!
BIRDMAN
THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL
INTO THE WOODS
PRIDE
ST. VINCENT

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
Again, just give it to Julianne as she’s on fine form this year!
AMY ADAMS BIG EYES
EMILY BLUNT INTO THE WOODS
HELEN MIRREN THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY
JULIANNE MOORE MAPS TO THE STARS
QUVENZHANÉ WALLIS ANNIE

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
How good was Ralph Fiennes in The Grand Budapest Hotel!!??  But, it’s gotta be Michael Keaton’s year to see his big comeback all the way through.
RALPH FIENNES THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL
MICHAEL KEATON BIRDMAN
BILL MURRAY ST. VINCENT
JOAQUIN PHOENIX INHERENT VICE
CHRISTOPH WALTZ BIG EYES

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
The Lego Movie is one of the best films of the year, bar the animated feature category.  Let’s hope the Golden Globes recognize this.  Shout out to Big Hero 6 as well!
BIG HERO 6
THE BOOK OF LIFE
THE BOXTROLLS
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2
THE LEGO MOVIE

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
This list seems to be missing Xavier Dolan’s Mommy, but with what we have on offer, it’s gotta be Leviathan.
FORCE MAJEURE TURIST (SWEDEN)
GETT: THE TRIAL OF VIVIANE (ISRAEL)
IDA (POLAND/DENMARK)
LEVIATHAN (RUSSIA)
TANGERINES MANDARIINID (ESTONIA)

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE
Patricia Arquette deserves this 100%.
PATRICIA ARQUETTE BOYHOOD
JESSICA CHASTAIN A MOST VIOLENT YEAR
KEIRA KNIGHTLEY THE IMITATION GAME
EMMA STONE BIRDMAN
MERYL STREEP INTO THE WOODS

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE
This one’s tough as I’d be happy to see Ethan Hawke, Edward Norton or J.K. Simmons walk away with the prize.  While all three deserve to win, J.K. Simmons’ performance in Whiplash has the most impact, therefore he should be the one to take home the statue.
ROBERT DUVALL THE JUDGE
ETHAN HAWKE BOYHOOD
EDWARD NORTON BIRDMAN
MARK RUFFALO FOXCATCHER
J.K. SIMMONS WHIPLASH

BEST DIRECTOR – MOTION PICTURE
Another tough call of who deserves it most – Wes Anderson for his amazingly fresh yet signature style?  Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for the most unique film of modern cinema?  Or Richard Linklater for investing over 12 years into Boyhood to make the most emotionally affective film ever made?  As much as I love Anderson, Inarritu and Linklater did something much more spectacular with their films.  As for who I’m rooting for – I refuse to choose.
WES ANDERSON THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL
AVA DUVERNAY SELMA
DAVID FINCHER GONE GIRL
ALEJANDRO GONZÁLEZ IÑÁRRITU BIRDMAN
RICHARD LINKLATER BOYHOOD

BEST SCREENPLAY – MOTION PICTURE
This may seem random, but I’m going with Gone Girl on this one.  Adapting one’s own book for the screen and not missing a beat to make this one of the most riveting thrillers of the year is quite a feat.
WES ANDERSON THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL
GILLIAN FLYNN GONE GIRL
ALEJANDRO GONZÁLEZ IÑÁRRITU BIRDMAN
RICHARD LINKLATER BOYHOOD
GRAHAM MOORE THE IMITATION GAME

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE – MOTION PICTURE
My vote is for not Hans Zimmer who ruined Interstellar with his loud and grating score.  I always give Reznor and Ross my vote, but this time I am swayed by Sanchez’ most unique improvised jazz drum score for Birdman – a huge part of what makes this film as inspired as it is.
ALEXANDRE DESPLAT THE IMITATION GAME
JÓHANN JÓHANNSSON THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING
TRENT REZNOR, ATTICUS ROSS GONE GIRL
ANTONIO SANCHEZ BIRDMAN
HANS ZIMMER INTERSTELLAR

BEST ORIGINAL SONG – MOTION PICTURE
Can’t say that I’m at all informed in this category. Abstain!

“GLORY” — SELMA
“MERCY IS” — NOAH
“OPPORTUNITY” — ANNIE

JESSICA LANGE AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW
FRANCES MCDORMAND OLIVE KITTERIDGE
FRANCES O’CONNOR THE MISSING
ALLISON TOLMAN FARGO

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
Everyone loves Matthew McConaughey at the moment and his performance is potentially the best of the bunch, but these other contenders will not go down without a fight.  It’s anyone’s game really.  Personally, I hope Freeman takes it home, for his Fargo accent alone!
MARTIN FREEMAN FARGO
WOODY HARRELSON TRUE DETECTIVE
MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY TRUE DETECTIVE
MARK RUFFALO THE NORMAL HEART
BILLY BOB THORNTON FARGO

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

MICHELLE MONAGHAN TRUE DETECTIVE

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
Star power sees Bill Murray taking this one home, and actually, I think rightfully so compared to the rest of the nominees.  Colin son-of-tom Hanks comes a close second for me.
MATT BOMER THE NORMAL HEART
ALAN CUMMING THE GOOD WIFE
COLIN HANKS FARGO
BILL MURRAY OLIVE KITTERIDGE
JON VOIGHT RAY DONOVAN
