Meow Meow: Feline Intimate
London Wonderground
Until June 8th, 2014
by Joanna Orland
International cabaret sensation Meow Meow brings her show Feline Intimate to the London Wonderground for this year’s Udderbelly Festival. The Wonderground performances follow her shows in the West End, concerts with the London Philharmonic and an acclaimed season at the Southbank Centre. Meow Meow took the stage to explain how her show was supposed to have been on Broadway next, but London Wonderground would have to do. She then proceeded to mesmerize the audience with her powerful singing voice all the while making sure her set went off with many hitches to great comedic effect.
Meow Meow powered through cover songs, some familiar, many not. Lack of familiarity was irrelevant as Meow Meow makes any song she sings her own. Relying heavily on audience participation, Meow Meow certainly lucked out at the press night for her London Wonderground run. The audience was filled with colourful characters who were more than happy to do her bidding, with some true odd gems getting their moment to shine.
Costume changes, props, makeup, lighting, Meow Meow is more than just a voice, she is a performer through and through. Supported by a pianist and percussionist, the cabaret singer did take a slight while to warm the typically polite British audience. By the end of the show, the audience was fully warmed and seriously involved in the show with nearly every person participating in some way shape or form. Meow Meow repaid in kindness by signing merchandise and posing for photos as soon as her set came to an end.
Meow Meow took the Wonderground, Udderbelly and Southbank by storm literally as the rain poured down on the beautiful Spiegeltent which plays host to an array of cabaret acts throughout the festival. Her voice, her body, her wit and her comedy timing make her one of the most talented cabaret acts working today.
