2014 Golden Globe Awards Winners
The 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards were hosted by the ever hilarious duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler on Sunday January 12th, 2014. There were some surprises, a few injustices and many hilarious quotes, notably from Tina Fey:
On Matthew McConaughey – “For his role in Dallas Buyers Club, he lost 45 pounds — or what actresses call being in a movie.”
“And now, like a supermodel’s vagina, let’s all give a warm welcome to Leonardo DiCaprio.”
“Meryl Streep is so brilliant in Osage: August County, proving that there are still great parts in Hollywood for Meryl Streep over 60.”
On Gravity – “It’s the story of how George Clooney would rather float away in space and die than spend any more time with a woman his own age.”
“One of my favorite movies this year is Her, which takes place in the not-so-distant future, which is perfect because so does Joaquin Phoenix.”
And the winners are…
BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
No surprises here. It’s still a disappointment that the Awards played it safe, rewarding hype rather than artistic achievement.
12 Years a Slave
Captain Phillips
Gravity
Philomena
Rush
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
Emma Thompson was my favourite of the bunch, but Cate Blanchett was always a firm favourite of the critics.

Sandra Bullock, “Gravity”
Judi Dench, “Philomena”
Emma Thompson, “Saving Mr. Banks”
Kate Winslet, “Labor Day”
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
I predicted Chiwetel with Matthew as a close second – and the underdog takes the win! Very happy for McConaughey as his performance is certainly the best of this bunch.
Chiwetel Ejiofor, “12 Years a Slave”
Idris Elba, “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”
Tom Hanks, “Saving Mr. Banks”
Matthew McConaughey, “Dallas Buyers Club”
Robert Redford, “All Is Lost”

Julia Dreyfus, “Enough Said”
Meryl Streep, “August: Osage County”
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
Ok, this was a surprise. I thought Bruce Dern had this one nailed. I guess celebrity goes further than talent. Having said that, Leo’s performance as Jordan Belfort is excellent… but just not as good as Bruce Dern or Christian Bale.
Christian Bale, “American Hustle”
Bruce Dern, “Nebraska”
Oscar Isaac, “Inside Llewyn Davis”
Leonardo DiCaprio, “The Wolf of Wall Street”
Joaquin Phoenix, “Her”

BEST DIRECTOR – MOTION PICTURE
I called this one too! #Smug. While Gravity is not the best film, it is the biggest directorial feat. And while Best Film and Best Director categories normally align, I am in total agreement that this year there is an exception.
Alfonso Cuaron, “Gravity”
Paul Greengrass, Captain Phillips”
Steve McQueen, “12 Years a Slave”
Alexander Payne, “Nebraska”
David O. Russell, “American Hustle”
