Tatty Devine Takes New York
by Dani Aronson
Anyone who knows me knows that I love many things, but at the top of the list are boys with glasses, red lipstick, cats, Eurovision, and Tatty Devine jewelry. Tatty Devine is Harriet Vine and Rosie Wolfenden – two brilliant and talented ladies that have been making beauty out of perplex since 1999. I first discovered Tatty Devine 11 years ago on Brick Lane in London, and I’ve been in lust ever since. The Tatty ladies just released a book How to Make Jewelry with Tatty Devine, which I was so excited to get my hands on. I recently had the pleasure of going to a sugar skull necklace workshop at the Brick Lane location in October. The lovely shop girls (Hi Lucy!) fed us tea and bourbon creams, and I made this:
For years I’ve been asking the Tatty Devine shop girls when they would open a store stateside, and well, it’s finally happening in (my lovely home) BROOKLYN. If you ask me, this is a more exciting development than The Nets moving here! To celebrate this new venture, Rosie and Harriet have been in New York hosting a series of workshops and book launch parties. I attended the bunting necklace workshop and book launch party at PowerHouse Arena in Dumbo, Brooklyn. I heard that Rosie and Harriet would be there, but never in my wildest glitter-filled dreams did I imagine I would be sharing jewelry pliers with Harriet, while discussing brownies, blogging, and cell phone tracking.
I showed up to the event wearing my Dior rouge lipstick, gold heart jumper from Primark, sugar skull necklace, glitter heart ring, and glitter heart earrings. I felt very fabulous in my Tatty Devine favorites as I walked to the event, trying to forget the enormous puffy coat covering my fierce ensemble. When I arrived, I spotted Rosie out front, and we had a lovely little chat – I told her what a huge Tatty fan-girl I was, and she told me she loved ‘all of this’ as she motioned to my face; my mind swirled with perplex glitter hearts! At the event, I met women of all trades; engineers, students, bloggers, artists, and even a scientist, all so excited over the cups of triangle perplex at our fingertips. I opted for a Miami-themed color palate for my necklace, while my friend Jojo created a patriotic piece:
I had so much fun at my second Tatty Devine jewelry workshop, and I am so thrilled to have a chance to make some of my own Tatty inspired pieces with my new book to guide me. Harriet also showed me a sneak peak of the next collection (that they are currently working on), and I’m so ready to get my hands on it – lush! Tatty Devine’s first stateside store will open Summer 2013! Will you be there!? I know I will, wearing all of my finest perplex, and feeling like a million quid.
