True Dud
by Joanna Orland
I spent a cold Saturday afternoon holed up in my cosy little flat watching Open House. A horror film starring Tricia Helfer (Battlestar G), Brian Geraghty (The Hurt Locker), and Rachel Blanchard (Peep Show & Flight of the Conchords!). The advertising will have you believe that this film also stars (even PRIMARILY stars) True Blood couple Anna Paquin (Sookie) and Stephen Moyer (Bill), but I would say that they have cameos, not actual featured roles… but anyway… technicality. Either way, I loved Stephen finally not speaking in that silly Bill voice!
Brian Geraghty plays an unemotive serial killer with a penchant for white t-shirts. A seriously inconvenient fashion choice for a serial killer, but as he seems to have an unlimited supply, not a huge problem for him. His killing partner in crime is played by Tricia Helfer and they basically take over Rachel Blanchard’s house and kill anyone that dare enter it.
I won’t spoil the plot too much, not that that matters…. It’s an entertaining horror film with a made-for-tv vibe that will keep you entertained for a cold winter’s afternoon. I can’t praise it too much as it is 2-dimensional and ridiculous, but I was entertained for those 88 minutes of my life spent watching it.
I was wondering why this experienced cast, mostly Anna Paquin, would bother with such a straight-to-dvd film, until the credits rolled. Written and Directed by Andrew Paquin – older brother of Anna. Ah. Another mystery solved by Detective Loose Lips.
So if your curiosity is peaked and you love a good B-movie, then Open House is out on Blu-Ray and DVD now!
