2017 NOMINATIONS
(presented in 2018)
BEST FILM
I think it will be between The Shape of Water and Three Billboards. I would prefer The Shape of Water – while we’ve reviewed Three Billboards as a 5 star film and The Shape of Water as a 4, The Shape of Water is a timeless tale and Three Billboards is surely to become dated over time.
CALL ME BY YOUR NAME
DARKEST HOUR
DUNKIRK
THE SHAPE OF WATER
THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI
OUTSTANDING BRITISH FILM
I haven’t seen a few of these… I think 3 have a distinct edge; Three Billboards due to its Golden Globe wins, The Death of Stalin due to its British sense of humour, and Paddington 2 due to the inexplicable love the British public has for this film!
DARKEST HOUR
THE DEATH OF STALIN
GOD’S OWN COUNTRY
LADY MACBETH
PADDINGTON 2
THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI
OUTSTANDING DEBUT BY A BRITISH WRITER, DIRECTOR OR PRODUCER
I have heard so much about Lady Macbeth, I would put my money on it for the win!
THE GHOUL Gareth Tunley (Writer/Director/Producer), Jack Healy Guttman & Tom Meeten (Producers)
I AM NOT A WITCH Rungano Nyoni (Writer/Director), Emily Morgan (Producer)
JAWBONE Johnny Harris (Writer/Producer), Thomas Napper (Director)
KINGDOM OF US Lucy Cohen (Director)
LADY MACBETH Alice Birch (Writer), William Oldroyd (Director), Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly (Producer)
FILM NOT IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
This is a strange category as some of these films feel like they should have been eligible last year ie Elle, and The Salesman which won last year’s Oscar for Foreign Film. I am narrowing it down to these two for the win.
ELLE
FIRST THEY KILLED MY FATHER
THE HANDMAIDEN

DIRECTOR
Quite surprised to see Denis Villeneuve in here, but of course Blade Runner 2049 was beautifully shot, albeit super flat and dull emotionally speaking. Again, no women. No Greta Gerwig!!!!! Hopefully it goes to del Toro in this case.

At least Jordan Peele (Get Out) and Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) get a nomination here. Will likely go to McDonagh (Three Billboards).

I love the sound editing in Baby Driver, but the design is nothing spectacular. Star Wars on the other hand always does standout sound. Less so this time around, but still…. it’s Star Wars.

EE RISING STAR AWARD (voted for by the public)
Well, I don’t think Tessa Thompson belongs here as her star has already risen. She should’ve been here when she was starring in Creed 2 years ago. Now she’s too big for the Rising Star Boots, having featured in numerous high profile projects including but not limited to Westworld and Thor: Ragnarok. It’s Timothee Chalamet for me! Can’t say what the public will vote, but his star has risen the highest this year and straight out of ‘nowhere’.
