Golden Globe Nominees 2018

The Shape of Water

The 2018 Golden Globe Nominees were announced today. There were no outright surprises, but quite a bit of what feels like randomness in their selections. Let’s have a recap:

BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

These are all solid, safe choices, but by no means are these all the best of the year. The Florida Project and The Killing of a Sacred Deer are by far superior. In this case, I would assume The Shape of Water will win, with the most nominations out of any film.

a. CALL ME BY YOUR NAME
b. DUNKIRK
c. THE POST
d. THE SHAPE OF WATER
e. THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

I haven’t seen Molly’s Game, The Post or All the Money in the World, but none of these surprise me. It will probably go to Meryl as per usual. And that is ok!

a. JESSICA CHASTAIN, MOLLY’S GAME
b. SALLY HAWKINS, THE SHAPE OF WATER
c. FRANCES MCDORMAND. THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI
d. MERYL STREEP, THE POST
e. MICHELLE WILLIAMS, ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

I am somewhat surprised but very pleased by Chalamet’s nomination. The end credit scene of Call Me By Your Name is enough reason alone for his nom. But, it will probably go to Daniel Day-Lewis as he bows out with Phantom Thread, after a career deservedly filled with high accolades.

a. TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET, CALL ME BY YOUR NAME
b. DANIEL DAY-LEWIS, PHANTOM THREAD
c. TOM HANKS ,THE POST
d. GARY OLDMAN, DARKEST HOUR
e. DENZEL WASHINGTON, ROMAN J. ISRAEL, ESQ.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

I’m not sure what to make of horror film Get Out being labelled as a comedy, but it was clearly a strategic move that worked as it secured them this nomination! I haven’t yet seen The Disaster Artist or The Greatest Showman, but I loved I, Tonya and more than any other film in this category, think Lady Bird should win!

a. THE DISASTER ARTIST
b. GET OUT
c. THE GREATEST SHOWMAN
d. I, TONYA
e. LADY BIRD

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

Dench and Mirren are staples on the awards circuit, but not quite as deserving of these nominations this time round. Emma Stone is also completely overrated as an actress, and her performance in Battle of the Sexes was merely ‘fine’. Margot Robbie was brilliant as Tonya Harding in I, Tonya, but Saoirse Ronan deserves this win for Lady Bird!

a. JUDI DENCH, VICTORIA & ABDUL
b. HELEN MIRREN, THE LEISURE SEEKER
c. MARGOT ROBBIE, I, TONYA
d. SAOIRSE RONAN, LADY BIRD
e. EMMA STONE, BATTLE OF THE SEXES

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

Ansel Elgort!? He was clearly the weakest link in an otherwise fantastic movie! No no no! Just no…. I only saw a clip of The Greatest Showman and that was enough for me to disagree with Jackman’s nomination. Carell is uncanny in Battle of the Sexes and I just like his work in general…. I hear good things about Daniel Kaluuya in Get Out… Even though I’m not an outright James Franco fan, I do love his comedy work and can imagine his portrayal of Tommy Wiseau is worth the win.

a. STEVE CARELL, BATTLE OF THE SEXES
b. ANSEL ELGORT, BABY DRIVER
c. JAMES FRANCO, THE DISASTER ARTIST
d. HUGH JACKMAN, THE GREATEST SHOWMAN
e. DANIEL KALUUYA, GET OUT

BEST MOTION PICTURE – ANIMATED

I have it on good authority that The Breadwinner is very much a worthy winner, but my heart belongs to Coco. I LOVE this film and everything about it! Loving Vincent is a visual feast, but lacks in other departments. I have no idea what Ferdinand is, and I have no desire to watch The Boss Baby.

a. THE BOSS BABY
b. THE BREADWINNER
c. COCO
d. FERDINAND
e. LOVING VINCENT

BEST MOTION PICTURE – FOREIGN LANGUAGE

I can’t tell you how happy I am that A Fantastic Woman is nominated. It’s been overlooked in many “Best of 2017” film lists so far and I’m glad it’s getting its due at a major awards ceremony. It has my vote!

a. A FANTASTIC WOMAN (CHILE)
b. FIRST THEY KILLED MY FATHER (CAMBODIA)
c. IN THE FADE (GERMANY / FRANCE)
d. LOVELESS (RUSSIA)
e. THE SQUARE (SWEDEN / GERMANY / FRANCE)

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN ANY MOTION PICTURE

There are a few solid performances here so it’s a close call, but Laurie Metcalf edges out on Allison Janney in a better matriarchal performance.

a. MARY J. BLIGE, MUDBOUND
b. HONG CHAU, DOWNSIZING
c. ALLISON JANNEY, I, TONYA
d. LAURIE METCALF, LADY BIRD
e. OCTAVIA SPENCER, THE SHAPE OF WATER

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN ANY MOTION PICTURE

It’s hilarious to see Christopher Plummer get a nomination for the role in which he notoriously replaced Kevin Spacey at the eleventh hour – I think he only filmed these scenes a couple of weeks ago! Amazing!!! Of the others which I have seen, for me it’s a tough call between Willem Dafoe and Sam Rockwell. They both gave two amazing, best-of-the-year performances.

a. WILLEM DAFOE, THE FLORIDA PROJECT
b. ARMIE HAMMER, CALL ME BY YOUR NAME
c. RICHARD JENKINS, THE SHAPE OF WATER
d. CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER, ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD
e. SAM ROCKWELL, THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI

BEST DIRECTOR – MOTION PICTURE

I am quite surprised at the lack of Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) on here. Even Dees Rees (Mudbound) deserves some consideration. But, this is sadly still a male-dominated category in this day and age. For shame! #GiveGretaTheGlobe! Anyway, it’ll probably be del Toro who in fairness, did excellent work on The Shape of Water.

a. GUILLERMO DEL TORO, THE SHAPE OF WATER
b. MARTIN MCDONAGH, THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI
c. CHRISTOPHER NOLAN, DUNKIRK
d. RIDLEY SCOTT, ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD
e. STEVEN SPIELBERG, THE POST

BEST SCREENPLAY – MOTION PICTURE

Hopefully Greta gets redemption in this category with a win for Lady Bird – it is genuinely a brilliantly written and developed film. For fans of witty dialogue, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is a fab choice, and I assume Aaron Sorkin does good work on Molly’s Game.

a. THE SHAPE OF WATER
b. LADY BIRD
c. THE POST
d. THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI
e. MOLLY’S GAME

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE – MOTION PICTURE

Please not Hans Zimmer – I hated the score of Dunkirk so much, I had ear plugs in the whole time and couldn’t help but wonder just how many orchestras were tracklayed to get it to sound so RIDICULOUSLY loud! No!

a. CARTER BURWELL, THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI
b. ALEXANDRE DESPLAT, THE SHAPE OF WATER
c. JONNY GREENWOOD, PHANTOM THREAD
d. JOHN WILLIAMS, THE POST
e. HANS ZIMMER, DUNKIRK

BEST ORIGINAL SONG – MOTION PICTURE

If Remember Me doesn’t win, then I don’t know…. I cried on two separate occasions when this song was played in Coco. And then a bit again in the credits.

a. “HOME” — FERDINAND
b. “MIGHTY RIVER” — MUDBOUND
c. “REMEMBER ME” — COCO
d. “THE STAR” — THE STAR
e. “THIS IS ME” — THE GREATEST SHOWMAN

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA

Ok, seems like TV is even more high quality than film this year as these choices prove to be more difficult. I haven’t caught up with the second season of The Crown, but obviously the first is a masterpiece. Stranger Things had a brilliant second season and is potentially the most beloved show currently. But, The Handmaid’s Tale is a sensational hit!

a. THE CROWN
b. GAME OF THRONES
c. THE HANDMAID’S TALE
d. STRANGER THINGS
e. THIS IS US

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA

For me it’s a tie between Claire Foy and Elisabeth Moss. Can they share the award?

a. CAITRIONA BALFE, OUTLANDER
b. CLAIRE FOY, THE CROWN
c. MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL, THE DEUCE
d. KATHERINE LANGFORD, 13 REASONS WHY
e. ELISABETH MOSS, THE HANDMAID’S TALE

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA

Jason Bateman for Ozark? I couldn’t get past the first episode – YAWN. Sterling K. Brown for the win!

a. JASON BATEMAN, OZARK
b. STERLING K. BROWN, THIS IS US
c. FREDDIE HIGHMORE, THE GOOD DOCTOR
d. BOB ODENKIRK, BETTER CALL SAUL
e. LIEV SCHREIBER, RAY DONOVAN

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

Will & Grace??? I watched that….. when I had the flu and needed something mindless. It was barely good enough for that purpose. Master of None please!

a. BLACK-ISH
b. THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL
c. MASTER OF NONE
d. SMILF
e. WILL & GRACE

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

Tough category. I haven’t seen any of these except Glow so will put my hopes into Alison Brie who gave a wonderful performance.

a. PAMELA ADLON, BETTER THINGS
b. ALISON BRIE, GLOW
c. RACHEL BROSNAHAN, THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL
d. ISSA RAE, INSECURE
e. FRANKIE SHAW, SMILF

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

Aziz please! He’s really matured since the first season of Master of None. SO GOOD!

a. ANTHONY ANDERSON, BLACK-ISH
b. AZIZ ANSARI, MASTER OF NONE
c. KEVIN BACON, I LOVE DICK
d. WILLIAM H. MACY, SHAMELESS
e. ERIC MCCORMACK, WILL & GRACE

BEST TELEVISION LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

I can’t quite say what I prefer, but odds are Big Little Lies will take it home as people love it. I liked it. Sadly it was Fargo‘s weakest season so far so my heart’s not in it.

a. BIG LITTLE LIES
b. FARGO
c. FEUD: BETTE AND JOAN
d. THE SINNER
e. TOP OF THE LAKE: CHINA GIRL

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A LIMITED SERIES OR A MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

I think the consensus will be Nicole Kidman.

a. JESSICA BIEL, THE SINNER
b. NICOLE KIDMAN, BIG LITTLE LIES
c. JESSICA LANGE, FEUD: BETTE AND JOAN
d. SUSAN SARANDON, FEUD: BETTE AND JOAN
e. REESE WITHERSPOON, BIG LITTLE LIES

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES OR A MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

I hope Jude Law can take this one home for the campy drama of The Young Pope.

a. ROBERT DE NIRO, THE WIZARD OF LIES
b. JUDE LAW, THE YOUNG POPE
c. KYLE MACLACHLAN, TWIN PEAKS
d. EWAN MCGREGOR, FARGO
e. GEOFFREY RUSH, GENIUS

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

Laura or Ann should win this one!

a. LAURA DERN, BIG LITTLE LIES
b. ANN DOWD, THE HANDMAID’S TALE
c. CHRISSY METZ, THIS IS US
d. MICHELLE PFEIFFER, THE WIZARD OF LIES
e. SHAILENE WOODLEY, BIG LITTLE LIES

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

David Thewlis is too creepy in Fargo to reward that behaviour! I love David Harbour in Stranger Things, but it will probably go to Alexander Skarsgard for Big Little Lies.

a. DAVID HARBOUR, STRANGER THINGS
b. ALFRED MOLINA, FEUD: BETTE AND JOAN
c. CHRISTIAN SLATER, MR. ROBOT
d. ALEXANDER SKARSGÅRD, BIG LITTLE LIES
e. DAVID THEWLIS, FARGO
